Ashanti West Management Engages Franchise Officers to Boost Revenue Collection

Management of the Ashanti West Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has engaged Franchise Officers across four districts, urging them to strengthen their efforts to improve revenue collection and reduce customer debt.

The engagement, held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, brought together Franchise Officers, District Managers, Customer Management Officers and Debt Management Officers from the Abuakwa, Suame, Adum and Ahinsan Districts.

Beyond reviewing performance figures, the meeting provided an opportunity for Management to listen to the officers, understand the challenges they face in the field and discuss issues relating to their remuneration and the effective execution of their new responsibilities.

The Franchise Officer initiative, piloted in the Abuakwa and Suame Districts in 2025, was expanded and formally launched in 2026 as part of ECG’s efforts to strengthen revenue mobilisation and improve customer service.

Under the initiative, former meter readers have taken on broader responsibilities, including distributing bills, reading postpaid meters, disconnecting customers in arrears and monitoring prepaid meters.

Addressing the officers, General Manager of the Ashanti West Region, Ing. George Amoah, expressed concern about the Region’s recent performance in collecting revenue from Non-SLΤ customers.

He noted that although Franchise Officers were reading more meters, this was not translating into a corresponding improvement in revenue collection, particularly because some customers in arrears were not being disconnected.

“We have observed with grave concern the dwindling revenue from NSLT customers as a result of Franchise Officers not disconnecting customers in arrears even after reading those meters,” Ing. Amoah said.

He reminded the officers that every visit to a customer should go beyond taking a meter reading. Franchise Officers, he explained, are expected to check the customer’s debt status and take the necessary steps to ensure that outstanding bills are settled.

Customers can make payments through the ECG Power App or by dialling *226#. In remote areas, customers may also seek assistance from bonded cashiers.

Ing. Amoah further tasked Customer Management Officers and Debt Management Officers to closely monitor the performance of Franchise Officers in their respective districts, with a clear expectation of improved results in September.

The call for improved performance was reinforced by the General Manager for Revenue, Mrs. Cynthia Bannerman, who disclosed that Management had tasked the Customer Service Directorate to identify districts with high debt levels and take practical steps to bring those debts down.

She challenged Franchise Officers to take ownership of the debt situation in their respective operational areas.

Mrs. Bannerman also reminded the officers of the importance of timely bill settlement, referencing PURC L.I. 2413, which provides for customers to settle their current bills within the stipulated 14-day period.

She urged the Franchise Officers to ensure that customers do not accumulate unnecessary arrears, stressing that the initiative was introduced to help ECG improve its debt position through more effective revenue collection.

For Ashanti West Regional Commercial Manager, Mr. Jonathan Asante, the success of the initiative will depend not only on the number of meters read but also on how effectively officers follow through on outstanding debts.

“Revenue collection drives the Company, and as Franchise Officers, you have an important role to play in improving the financial health of the Company. Try and eschew negative habits like extortion and deal with customers professionally,” he said.

His comments highlighted the need for Franchise Officers to balance revenue mobilisation with professionalism and respectful customer engagement, particularly as they interact directly with customers in communities.

The engagement also gave the Franchise Officers an opportunity to share their experiences and challenges with Management.

Speaking on behalf of the officers, Mr. Richard Asamoah of the Abuakwa District expressed appreciation to Management for the engagement and the opportunity to discuss issues affecting their work.

He pledged that the officers would work to improve their performance in September and contribute more meaningfully to the Region’s revenue mobilisation efforts.

The meeting was attended by the Revenue Management Officer, Billing Processing Officer and Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti West Region.

As ECG continues to strengthen its revenue mobilisation efforts, the Franchise Officer initiative is expected to play an increasingly important role in bridging the gap between meter reading, customer engagement and actual revenue collection.

Nhyiaeso Chief assures support to end encroachment on utility corridors in Kumasi

Ashanti West – 5th September 2026

Traditional authorities of Nhyiaeso, a suburb of Kumasi, have pledged support to the Electricity Company of Ghana to protect lands serving as utility corridors in the area.

Chief of the community, Nana Osei Yaw Frimpong II, assured of ending encroachment of utility corridors and enforcing the right-of-way laws within his jurisdiction.

The Kumasi Nhyiaesohene made the assurances during a courtesy call on the management of the Ashanti West Region on Wednesday, September 2, at the Regional Office in Adum.

“Electricity cannot get to our homes and businesses without poles and transformers, so if you want to install a transformer at designated utility corridors within my jurisdiction and you notice anyone has encroached or if you see anyone selling beside your poles or under your wires, kindly report to my office and we will ensure the right thing is done,” he pledged.

The support from the traditional authority comes at a time when utility companies like the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) are battling the menace of heavy encroachment on lands earmarked for the construction of electricity infrastructure.

The visit afforded the chief the opportunity to interact with Ashanti West Management and deepen existing relations between ECG and traditional authorities in the Ashanti Region.

Nana Osei Yaw Frimpong II also commended ECG for improved service delivery in areas under his jurisdiction, like Ahodwo, parts of Adum, Darkodwom, Danyame, Ridge, KATH, Ridge Condos, and surrounding areas.

“Electricity has become a necessity for every household, and without electricity, businesses and, to a larger extent, the economy will collapse, so as traditional authorities, we have to support you to do your work diligently. If the light stays on, our people will also benefit tremendously, and I must say that in recent times, the power has been stable, so keep up the good work,” he said.

Ing. George Amoah, General Manager for ECG Ashanti West Region, welcomed the assurance and promised further collaboration with traditional authorities to serve the region.

“As the Kumasi Nhyiaesohene, your territory is critical to our operations, as it is located in the central part of Kumasi, with individuals encroaching on our right of way with their buildings. These individuals end up writing to ECG to relocate our infrastructure at an extra cost to the company, so pledging to support us and ending this menace is a step in the right direction,” he said.

Ing. Amoah noted that the electricity distributor is fully aware of the load growth in areas like Ridge, Danyame, Ahodwo, and the Adum Central Business District, with numerous high-rise buildings replacing smaller buildings, and is assured of an improved power supply for commercial activities in the area.

Ing. Amoah announced that ECG has upgraded some power transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point, and GRIDCo is currently upgrading their power transformer as part of efforts to meet the growing demand of power in the greater Kumasi and Ashanti regions.

“We have also started a project to install two new 500 kVA transformers within the Adum Central Business District to meet the growing demand for electricity in Adum,” he added.
