The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Volta Region is strengthening its collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to enhance safety and prevent bushfires, particularly during the dry harmattan season.

As part of this effort, the Volta Regional General Manager of ECG, Ms. Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, paid a working visit to the Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Joseph Tetteh Freeman, at the GNFS Regional Office. The visit aimed at reinforcing the strong working relationship between the two institutions and exploring ways to improve fire prevention and emergency response strategies.

The meeting comes at a crucial time when the harmattan season often records an increase in bushfires and fire outbreaks, many of which pose risks to electricity installations and infrastructure.

During the discussions, Ms. Jatoe-Kaleo expressed appreciation to the Ghana National Fire Service for its continuous support to ECG, particularly in responding swiftly to fire incidents involving electrical installations across the region. She emphasised the importance of sustaining the collaboration to safeguard lives, property, and critical national infrastructure.

She also encouraged the Fire Service to organise periodic fire safety training and emergency drills for ECG staff. According to her, such training will help enhance staff capacity in fire prevention, preparedness, and emergency response.

Ms. Jatoe-Kaleo further commended District Fire Commanders across the region for their dedication and professionalism in executing their duties. She reiterated ECG’s unwavering commitment to safety and public education, stressing that preventing fires and protecting electricity infrastructure requires collective responsibility from all stakeholders.

Responding to the visit, ACFO II Freeman described the engagement as timely and necessary, noting that strong coordination between ECG and the Fire Service remains essential, especially during fire outbreaks involving electricity.

He highlighted that ECG is often the first institution contacted when fire incidents involve electrical installations, making close collaboration between the two organisations critical to effective emergency management.

ACFO II Freeman assured ECG of the Fire Service’s commitment to intensifying public education on bushfire prevention during the harmattan season. He added that District Commanders have been directed to strengthen community engagement and awareness creation within their operational areas.

The continued partnership between ECG and the Ghana National Fire Service demonstrates both institutions’ shared commitment to promoting safety, protecting infrastructure, and serving communities more effectively.

ECG Managing Director Urges Newly Inducted Engineers to Embrace Ethics, Learning and Leadership

Accra – 26th August 2026

Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ing Kwame Kpekpena, has urged newly inducted professional engineers to embrace continuous learning, ethical conduct and leadership as they advance their careers.

Addressing the 49th Induction Ceremony of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) in Accra, Ing Kpekpena said professional success was built through discipline, commitment, continuous learning and a willingness to take on challenging assignments.

Drawing on more than 35 years of professional experience, he encouraged the engineers to be dependable, understand the principles behind their work and treat every assignment as an opportunity to acquire new knowledge.

“Do not simply perform tasks. Understand why they are performed,” he advised, urging them to study standards, procedures and the theories underpinning engineering practice.

Ing Kpekpena also encouraged the engineers to broaden their knowledge beyond technical expertise by developing skills in leadership, communication, finance, strategy, negotiation and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

He urged them to actively participate in professional institutions, including the GhIE and the Engineering Council, saying such platforms offered opportunities for networking, learning and leadership development.

The ECG Managing Director further advised the engineers to develop both specialisation and versatility, while preparing themselves for leadership responsibilities from the early stages of their careers.

He said engineers must also make their contributions visible by documenting their work, sharing ideas and volunteering for challenging assignments, rather than waiting for their capabilities to be discovered.

On professional conduct, he urged them to pursue their ambitions without undermining others and to uphold integrity even when doing the right thing was difficult or costly.

“Integrity is one of the few assets whose value increases with age,” he said.

Ing Kpekpena said the country’s development depended significantly on engineers who could combine technical competence with sound judgement, ethical leadership and a strong commitment to public service.

He, therefore, encouraged the new professionals to use their knowledge and skills to contribute to solving Ghana’s infrastructure, energy, industrial and technological challenges.

Ing Kpekpena congratulated the newly inducted engineers and reminded them that their induction marked the beginning of a new phase of professional responsibility and service.

He said Ghana needed engineers who were technically competent, ethically grounded, courageous in leadership and committed to national development.
